  • You will work together with 2 other students. We take it for granted that all 3 of you put in roughly the same amount of work. Groups with only two students are allowed, but you need to be prepared for some extra work in that case.

Written report

Demonstration =    presentation of working design. We ask individual questions!

Written report =    a readable short report delivered to me as PDF typically consisting of

  • Introduction
  • Design, where you explain with text and diagrams how your design works
  • Results, that you have measured
  • Conclusions
  • Appendix : All Verilog and C code. Comments!

A short report must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. One paginated document, preferably in PDF
  2. All sections are numbered. There is a table of contents. The code can be placed in an appendix.
  3. All figures and tables are numbered. The text references to these figures/tables

Labs are (usually) approved like this:

  1. DEM = a working design has been demonstrated
  2. K = comments on the lab report, REP = report OK but no demo
  3. OK = both demo and lab report approved

Labs are returned in Kent's office
(if there are no comments the result will only be reported here)

This year we will try something slightly different. First we measure the frame rate (frames per second measured from memory to memory, that is encode_image).

To get a reasonable frame rate we use the 320x240 test image wunderb.raw. Your result must of course be bit exact. Your wunderb.jpg must be the same regardless of how jpegtest has been executed. You can run it on the host computer or on your own accelerated FPGA-computer.

For the groups that achieve at least 25 fps, we use the cost as a tie breaker. The group with the lowest cost is the winner. The cost is measured by the formula

     cost = 100*((nr of LUTs)/46080 + (nr of block RAMs)/120 +
               (nr of multipliers)/120)/3,

which is just a percentage of the resources in the FPGA.

Figures are in Megaclockcycles for running the jpegtest program on the 400x512 testbild.raw. The numbers are from encode_image. It takes roughly 35 Mc to run the unaccelerated version on the OR1200 computer.
