To increase the fuel efficiency for vehicles, platooning is a promising technology. The idea of platooning is to let several vehicles drive in a convoy and communicate (via wireless communication). With a smart control of the vehicles within the platoon, a substantial reduction in fuel consumption is possible to achieve. An idea of the potential can be found in the following figure:

This project

The main idea in this project is to contribute to the development of a system aimed for participating in a future round of Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge, GCDC. Within this project, an environment for software simulations of a platoon as well as development of the control algorithm is to be carried out. Parallel to this project, a development of the hardware system aimed for running the control algorithms online in the vehicle is performed at the Division of Vehicular System at Linköping University. The software simulation developed within this project is also prepared for running Hardware In the Loop simulations with this system.
