TSIU03 - Gradings and Examination

NOTE!! These pages are outdated. The course pages are now in Lisam.

During the course the students will learn the following skills, and the will be examined for them:

  • Design a digital circuit (RTL) that calculates a mathematical function.
  • Analyze the mathematical function calculated by a digital circuit (RTL).
  • Generate VHDL code that describes a digital circuit (RTL).
  • Analyze the digital circuit (RTL) described by a VHDL code.
  • Formulate the requirements for a digital system.
  • Identify the phases and tasks involved in the development of a digital system.
  • Generate, analyze and compare alternative approaches to implement a digital system.
  • Create an implementation of a digital system on an FPGA that fulfills a set of requirements.
  • Apply simulation tools to test, verify and validate a digital system.
  • Describe a digital system and justify that it meets a set of requirements

In order to be examined, the students have to be register in the course. The deadline to register in the course is two weeks into the teaching period. A student that fails to register in this period loses the right to be examined in the course.

Examination of LAB1 (the four labs)

The laboratories are examined by presenting the work to the teachers. Although the labs are presented in pairs, students are examined independently. In order to pass the lab tasks, the work has to be finished and each student has to demonstrate that he/she understands the work. In case of doubt about one of the students, this student will not get a pass, but later (in the same lab session or in another one) he/she will get a new opportunity to show his/her knowledge. Each individual lab is graded as "pass" or "fail", and you must pass all the labs to get a "pass" in LAB1 (see Organization).

Examination of PRA1 (the assignments and project)

PRA1 is graded as "pass" or "fail". A "pass" in PRA1 requires a "pass" in the assignments and in the project. These two parts are examined independently.

Examination of the Assignments

The grade for each assignment is 0 to 100 points. To get a "pass" in the assignments, the average of the tree assignments must be at least 50 points (150 points in total).

Examination of the Project

The grade for the project is also "pass" or "fail". To pass, you need a "pass" in all the project documents, presentations and, of course, the produced product (demo + reviewed code).

Note, that while assignments are done individually, the project is done in group. Thus, the grade for the assignments may be different for different members of the same project group. The grade for the project will be, in principle, the same for all the members of the group. This means that all in the group must assure that every member does his/her part. If this is not the case, the students must inform the course responsible as soon as possible. The course responsible will help to find a good solution for everybody.

The teachers may also ask for individual presentations of the work (written or oral) for one or several students in a group and evaluate them independently. Individual presentations may be done during the implementation phase, or after the final presentation.
